How to Break Down Sections for Roman and Numerical Page Numbers<\/h1>\n\n

\n When a document contains front matter and a main body, you may need to use\n Roman numerals<\/strong> for the front matter and\n Arabic numbers<\/strong> for the main content.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n For example, the front matter can use\n i, ii, iii…<\/span>,\n while the main body begins with\n 1, 2, 3…<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n

\n Place your cursor at the end of the page where your Roman numeral section\n (front matter) ends.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Go to the Layout<\/span> tab on the top ribbon.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Click Breaks<\/span> and select\n Next Page<\/span> under\n Section Breaks<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Important:<\/strong>\n Make sure you select Next Page<\/strong> under\n Section Breaks<\/strong>, rather than selecting an ordinary page break.\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

\n 2<\/span>\n Add and Format Roman Numerals\n <\/div>\n\n

\n Go to the first section. Double-click the header or footer area.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Select \u9801\u78bc<\/span> from the\n Insert<\/span> tab.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Choose your preferred location, such as\n Bottom of Page<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Next, go to\n \u9801\u78bc<\/span> >\n Format Page Numbers<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n In the Number format<\/strong> dropdown, select lowercase Roman\n numerals:\n I, II, III…<\/span>\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Click OK<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Result:<\/strong>\n The pages in the front matter will now display Roman numerals such as\n I, II, III, IV…<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

\n Scroll down to the new section where you want the Arabic numbers to begin.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Double-click the header or footer in this new section.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n In the ribbon, turn off\n Link to Previous<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n This separates the new section from the previous section so that its\n page numbering can be formatted independently.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Important:<\/strong>\n The Link to Previous<\/strong> option must be turned off in the\n new section before changing its page-number format.\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

\n With the cursor in the new section’s header or footer, go to:\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Insert<\/span> >\n \u9801\u78bc<\/span> >\n Format Page Numbers<\/span>\n <\/p>\n\n

\n In the Number format<\/strong> dropdown, select standard Arabic\n numbers:\n 1, 2, 3…<\/span>\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Under Page numbering<\/strong>, select\n Start at<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Set the value to 1<\/strong>, then click\n OK<\/span>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Result:<\/strong>\n The main body of your document will begin with page\n 1<\/span>, followed by\n 2, 3, 4…<\/span>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n
