WE DEMONSTRATE THAT BESIDES THE STANDARD THERMODYNAMIC MODES, THERE ARE NON-THERMODYNAMIC MODES OF BLACK HOLE EVAPORATION WHICH CONTAIN REMNANTS. THE PURE THERMODYNAMIC PROCESS IS RECOVERED WHEN THE GAUSS-BONNET ACTION IS INVOLVED.
