How to Find a Book?

How do I know the format of the book?

In the discovery system, you will find the item type for ‘Book’, which combines the titles for print and digital format. You can identify the different by the access source.

Classification

10 main classes of Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)

000 – Computer science, information and general works
Most general class and is used for works not limited to any one specific discipline, e.g., encyclopedias, newspapers, general periodicals. This class is also used for certain specialized disciplines that deal with knowledge and information, e.g., computer science, library and information science, journalism.

100 – Philosophy and psychology
Subject for philosophy, parapsychology and occultism, and psychology.

200 – Religion
Subject for religion.

Note: The philosophy and religion subjects are using a customised classification based on DDC.

300 – Social sciences
Subject for social sciences, including sociology, anthropology, statistics, political science, economics, law, public administration, social problems and services, education, commerce, communications, transportation, and customs.

400 – Language
Subject for language, linguistics, and specific languages. Literature (e.g. novel) is found in 800.

500 – Sciences
Subject for natural sciences and mathematics.

600 – Technology
Subject for technology.

700 – Arts and recreation
Subject for art in general, fine and decorative arts, music, and the performing arts.

800 – Literature
Subject for literature, and includes rhetoric, prose, poetry, drama, etc.

900 – History and geography
Subject for history and geography.

How to read the classification number?

Call number is the classification of the book. After you search in library catalogue, mark down the number and find the location.

600 Technology (Applied sciences)
630 Agriculture and related technologies
636 Animal husbandry
636.7 Dogs
636.8 Cats

Conduct your initial search using our search engine. For searching a printed book, the Library catalog is more preferable.

For the book (print book only) you need and not available at the moment, you can log in to the library catalogue (How to Login?) and place a hold, which means the current user cannot renew the book and you will be the next user of this book.

Print, Scanning & Photocopying

A public-use printing machine is located on the 1/F of the Library, Residential Hall Building. You can print or copy for A4 or A3 size. No cash is accepted, and only MacauPass is admitted to be charged.

Find a place to study

Both libraries provide a comfortable study environment in the reading rooms. At Ilha Verde, you may reserve a study room for a deep study. At St. Joseph Seminary Library, you will find a silent zone instead.
