Partnerships

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions is the leading international body representing the interests of people who rely on libraries and information professionals.

The International Association of Technological University Libraries was founded in Düsseldorf, Germany in May 1955, as an international forum for the exchange of ideas relevant to librarianship in technological universities throughout the world.

Realizing the importance and benefit of cooperation among the academic libraries in Macau by pooling their resources together, the Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao Government (GAES), with coordination effort made by the Macao Library & Information Management Association (MLIMA), had proposed to the higher education institutions in Macau for their libraries to form an alliance. This alliance includes nine higher education institutions libraries in Macau. Its main task is to achieve the mutual cooperation, share their core resources and build up an effective communication platform, so as to attain a cost-benefit way on library acquisitions, resources development and sharing, inter-library loan and also administrative expenses.
Macau Academic Library Alliance E-Resources Center is a virtual platform to house some commonly-used electronic databases, which are used by staff and students in these institutions in Macau. Staff and students in these higher education institutions in Macau can go to this website to have authorized access to all the electronic resources included.
For our USJ Library, being part of the Macau Academic Libraries Alliance has been an opportunity to enhance the quality of the resources available to the academic community, while sharing the knowledge and expertise with our fellow colleagues of other academic institutions in Macau.

On August 23, 2017, the devastating typhoon Hato hit Macau leaving an unprecedented trail of destruction. The impact on USJ’s brand new Ilha Verde Campus, just when it was about to open, was very severe. It demonstrated, among other things, that the basement initially allocated to the Library for its deposit was too vulnerable, and that a completely new design was required. Long-term, the USJ Library had been planning to house up to 60,000 volumes: 30,000 permanently accessible in the main reading rooms, and 30,000 less used items in 1,500 meters of shelf space in the basement. After Hato, however, the best solution to compensate for the lost space was to allocate deposit space on the second floor of the Library, use a compact shelf system for the deposit, increase investment in electronic resources, and add a multipurpose room for meetings and library activities. This expensive task, initially thought of as a long-term project, was unexpectedly made possible by the timely and generous support of The Adelson Family Foundation, who spontaneously sought us out days after the Hato disaster, to see how they could help.
