USJ and MICRCR co-hosted the Workshop for Book Pest Control
The Macao Institute of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Relics (MICRCR) and the Library of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) co-hosted a workshop on “Principles and Methods of Anoxic Disinfestation Technology” on the USJ Ilha Verde Campus on Saturday, March 5, 2022.
The workshop provided participants with theoretical explanations and practical demonstrations to enhance their knowledge of book pest control.
The climate in Macao is warm and humid, and the problem of insect pests in books is a significant one. Every year, thousands of books and paper documents in the USJ Library are damaged by insect pests; therefore, pest control is essential.
The USJ Library installed the Portuguese “EXPM Anoxia Disinfestation Bubble Kit” in operation last year. The library’s books and archives are processed in accordance with international standards, and the results are extremely satisfactory. Mr. Francisco Chan, the president of MICRCR, explained to the participants Macao’s common pest problems and physical control methods, and shared the principles and precautions of anoxic pest treatment.
Participants learned about the efficiency of the equipment, pest control procedures, and how to use physical methods to treat the pests that destroy books and paper documents during the workshop. Please contact the USJ Library at library@usj.edu.mo or +853 8592 5633 with any questions.
