The Immersive Mangrove Reading Room
Step into a sensory journey where scientific research, AI-generated storytelling, digital fabrication and biodiversity education meet inside the library.
The exhibition has been extended
Continue exploring Macao’s mangrove biodiversity through an immersive library experience.
Where research becomes something you can experience.
The Immersive Mangrove Reading Room transforms the library into a transdisciplinary sensory journey through Macao’s mangrove ecosystems.
Developed through collaboration between USJ Library, the Institute of Science and Environment and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities’ DFLab, the project combines scientific research with AI, 3D modelling, digital fabrication and immersive storytelling.
Visitors are invited to discover the hidden world of mangroves through objects, sounds, visual experiences, missions and interactive learning.

Making invisible research visible.
The project turns scientific knowledge into tangible, playful and accessible experiences for the community.
Scientific Research
Mangrove biodiversity research provides the scientific foundation for the experience, connecting visitors with the ecological importance of Macao’s coastal wetlands.
AI × Digital Fabrication
AI-generated concepts, 3D modelling and digital fabrication transform scientific information into physical Mangrove Guardians that visitors can observe and interact with.
Connecting the Reading Room to the SDGs.
The project brings together environmental research, sustainability education, biodiversity awareness and experiential learning. These connections align with four Sustainable Development Goals.

Quality Education
Learning through immersive, interdisciplinary and experiential education.
Explore Goal 4Climate Action
Building awareness of climate change, coastal ecosystems and environmental resilience.
Explore Goal 13Life Below Water
Exploring coastal and marine ecosystems and the biodiversity connected to mangrove habitats.

Ten species. Ten stories.
The Mangrove Guardians translate biodiversity research into memorable characters, inviting visitors to discover the species that form Macao’s mangrove ecosystems.

The Digital Mangrove Tree
Enter a digital ecosystem where scientific information, biodiversity and storytelling come together. The installation encourages visitors to see the mangrove not simply as a landscape, but as a living network of species and relationships.
Explore. Observe. Collect.
Visitors can become Mangrove Researchers and explore the Reading Room through a hands-on mission.
Explore
Search the Reading Room for the hidden Mangrove Guardians and discover the different species represented in the project.
Observe
Use the Researcher’s Handbook to investigate the ecological clues and stories behind each Guardian.
Collect
Complete the mission, collect stamps and receive a small souvenir celebrating your journey through the mangrove.
A library experience beyond books.
