Reading Library Call Numbers

The USJ Library uses the Dewey Decimal System, a classification system that allows librarians to arrange books on similar topics together.

Dewey has 10 broad classifications:
000 – 099 General Works, Computer Science & Information
100 – 199 Philosophy & Psychology
200 – 299 Religion
300 – 399 Social sciences
400 – 499 Language
500 – 599 Science
600 – 699 Technology
700 – 799 Arts & recreation
800 – 899 Literature
900 – 999 History & Geography

How to Read a Call Number

Where to find a call number

You will find the call number show in the book record throughout Library Catalogue.

Shelving Location

The book may locate in different branches. Check Current Library to make sure you will go to correct branch.

Yes, this transfer may take 2 – 7 days. If you need the book in rush, we suggest for the option for self pick up.

Step 1: Login to the Library Catalogue
Step 2: Go to the book record
Step 3: Click Place Hold
Step 4: Choose the Pick Up Location, confirm

You will receive the email notification after the book arrival. Bring the email and USJ ID to reference desk, and get the book.

Insert your information such as Title OR Author OR Keyword in Library Catalog, and search.


Library Catalog:
Step 1: After jumping to the library catalog, selected the Item Type for Book.

*Most of the resources in this system are hardcopy, excluded for the small amount of bought ebooks. You should see the item record in each selected book record.


Understand the status of the item record
In each book record, you will get the information for Title, Authors or Editors or Contributors, Publication details, Publishing Years, and Subjects (see the difference with keywords below).

Holding will show you the item record with the following information:

  • Current Location: The book may return to other branches, which will take time to transfer. If you need the book in a rush, we suggest contacting us and collecting the item in the current location.
  • Collection: Our library spacing is separated for different functions. Only the book show “General Collection” may browse on shelves.
  • Call Number
  • Status: Available = You can borrow; Not for Loan = No Borrowing Available and Read in the Library Only.
  • Barcode: An unique number for each book in the library.

OR search printed book through All (Discovery System).

Select Available in the Library to list the printed book if you’re using Discovery System.

The Library uses the Dewey Classification scheme to arrange its materials. The following gives an outline of the main subject divisions of the Dewey Classification. Check our subject distributions.

000 – 099 = General Works, Computer Science & Information
100 – 199 = Philosophy & Psychology
200 – 299 = Religion
300 – 399 = Social sciences
400 – 499 = Language
500 – 599 = Science

700 – 799 = Arts & recreation
800 – 899 = Literature
900 – 999 = History & Geography

Libraries & Opening Hours

We have two libraries open to all USJ students and staff. Pay attention! We will adjust opening hours for holidays. Check your university email for our latest announcement.

Print, Scanning & Photocopying

A public-use printing machine is located on the 1/F of the Library, Residential Hall Building. You can print or copy for A4 or A3 size. No cash is accepted, and only MacauPass is admitted to be charged.

Find a place to study

Both libraries provide a comfortable study environment in the reading rooms. At Ilha Verde, you may reserve a study room for a deep study. At St. Joseph Seminary Library, you will find a silent zone instead.
