INTRODUCTION

This publication is a collection of the essays from a conference held in June 2012 in Macao. The conference was co-sponsored by University of Saint Joseph, Macao and the Institute for the Study of Christian Culture, Renmin University of China. The theme of it dealt with the role and function of religions in Chinese society. In 2011, another conference was held in Beijing discussing the same theme, with participants coming from a variety of religious organizations and papers covering a broad spectrum of research subjects. Compared with the Beijing conference, the Macao one had a more focused theme on the role of Catholic churches in Chinese society. However, the Macao conference is a continuation from the one held in Beijing in 2011, and such continuity on some level should be seen in future.

This book collects papers from scholars coming from Macao, Hong Kong and mainland China. The exchanges and debates among the scholars from these places are fully exhibited here, and in the end some agreement with one another in these writings may be found. This does not necessarily mean one party worked to convince another party. But rather means that, after further discussions and exchanges, scholars from difference contexts knew more about the situation they commonly faced, and were more aware of the issues that they commonly concerned about. We believe that exchanges, confrontation and communication are the important avenues to pursue truth and the basic means for truth to exist and to be presented. I have been involved in the discussions and the debates al the conference and have personally benefited greatly from the talks.

The success of the Macao conference was achieved through the great hospitality and careful arrangement of University of Saint Joseph, Macao, and as attested to in the publication of the conference papers. I am honored to be invited to write a short introduction for this collection. I thus write this short note as a record of my reflection and gratitude.
